Dying Thought
Dying Thought is a tape based installation that explores the themes of memory and the loss of thought. Composed of a modified tape machine, an electric violin, magnetic tape and a speaker the work starts off with a 20 second loop of Mozart's La Crimosa, a requiem. As the machine runs the loop of tape stretches from the machine through the strings of an electric violin, vibrating them and making them drone. This droning sound is recorded onto the tape loop, and over the course of 8 hours slowly erases and erodes the music, leaving the droning sound of a lone violin. This installation is a way of equating the magnetic tape to the inner workings of the human mind, and showing as we age how that mind can lose memories and our thoughts die away.
